Thursday, March 20, it was reported that Senator (and hopeful presidential candidate) Barack Obama’s passport was breached. Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of State, apologized to Obama by telephone Thursday morning. Soon after, the state department announced that the passport files of Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton and Senator John McCain had also been breached. Rice then placed apologetic phone calls to Clinton and McCain as well. Thursday evening, the State Department announced that two contact employees were fired, and a third “disciplined” for examining the passport files. Spokesperson spokesman Sean McCormack said that the employees were motivated by "imprudent curiosity."
A similar scandal took place in 1992, when Bill Clinton’s passport data was also inappropriately accessed.
